Deer Lake - Emigrant Wilderness - 8/26 - 8/27/06

On Friday the 25th Mike, Steve and I headed out of the Bay Area and up to one of my favorite easy-to-get-to hiking areas...Emigrant Wilderness. From door to door I think the drive took about 3 1/2 hours, of course Steve was at the wheel which was definitely a factor :) Our plan was to an overnight loop from Gianelli to Crabtree Meadow staying at Deer Lake. In order to make that happen we called the ranger station in advance and had them fill out a permit. They were suppose to leave the permit in a pick up box so we could get it after hours but we got no love and no permit was there when we arrived. So we made a couple of slight adjustmens and camped out at one of the campgrounds in Pinecrest. Also instead of doing the loop from Gianelli we did a semi-loop from Crabtree. We started out at Crabtree and then went down a secondary trail to Pine Valley. I had done a trip through Pine Valley a few years ago to get to Chain Lakes and nicknamed the trip Mordor...it was all burnt out, ashes eve...

Desolation Wilderness - Echo Lakes to Waca Lake - 07/16 & 17, 2016

Trip Logistics      When - July  16– 17, 2016      Desolation Wilderness – Echo Lakes to Waca Lake      Total Elevation Gain – Approx 1000 ft.      Total Mileage – Approx. 16 miles; Partial off trail Pictures Desolation Wilderness, as most know, is hardly Desolated so I’m always looking for places that may not get too much foot traffic.  After studying the map I bit I settled in the area to the South of Lake Aloha - Channel Lakes, American Lake and Waca Lake.  Since Waca Lake was a bit further from the trail I chose that as our weekend destination.  From Echo Lake this is about an 8 mile hike with minimal elevation gain - less than 1000 feet.  I couldn’t find many trip reports about this lake and what was the best way to get there.  I saw one report from someone who took a less than ideal route and spend much longer trying to find the lake than needed and another report from a f...

Sierra National Forest - Blackcap Basin - July 17 - 24, 2020

Trip Logistics July 17-24, 2020 Sierra National Forest - Blackcap Basin - Red Mountain Basin and Bench Valley Total Mileage - 30ish - Lots of cross country on this trip Photos Originally Planned Route  - This wasn't the exactly route as originally planned but a version.  There were some deviations that ended up occurring on the trip. In the April timeframe it was becoming clear that there would likely be no organized Sierra Club outings for the summer and I started to plan for an alternative private trip.  I wanted to explore an area I might lead a Sierra Club trip at some point and also somewhere that was likely not to be too crowded.  I had read of Blackcap Basin just a few years earlier….maybe because it’s on the west side of the Sierra I didn’t know anything about it but reading a friend’s trip report and looking at the topo map it looked great.  The plan was to do an 8 day trip given the length of time to get in and out of the basins and 8 days is about all...
